Editor’s Note: The WIAA recently canceled spring sports due to the COVID-19 pandemic. At the Star-News, we’d like to give recognition to the athletes and coaches who had their seasons stopped prematurely. So over the next few weeks, we’ll run a series of stories on the teams that didn’t get a chance to perform in 2020.

Sauk Prairie senior forward Riley Jelinek was named first-team all-state. Jelinek led the state in scoring for the second year in a row, finishing with 83 points during the regular season. He was second in assists (49) and tied for fifth in goals (36). He also totaled five goals and three assists in three playoff games.

Sauk Prairie’s girls basketball team recently gave out its postseason awards. They included: • Offensive Player of the Year: Naomi Breunig (above), who averaged 17 points per game.  • Defensive Player of the Year: Ella Schad and Faith Holler were recognized with this award.

For more than a month, they held out hope. They crossed their fingers and kept preparing for a season they knew might never arrive. Tuesday, the end officially came for high school coaches and athletes across the state.

Dennis Wood prides himself on teaching “life lessons” to his girls softball team at Wisconsin Heights. This year, the COVID-19 pandemic beat him to the punch.

Sauk Prairie’s wrestling team rallied from an 0-3 start to finish strong, winning its final four duals this season. The Eagles followed that up with a sixth-place finish at the annual Badger Conference tournament to finish fourth overall in league standings.
