Amber Fiene loved her three years as Sauk Prairie’s girls basketball coach.
She was excited about the progress being made inside the Eagles’ program.
And that’s what made it so tough to step down.
The task was daunting.
The Star News recently asked a 12-person panel to vote for the top 10 male and top 10 female athletes to pass through Sauk Prairie High School in the 21st century.
Brandon Hellenbrand, who manages Middleton’s Home Talent League team, had a hunch this was coming.
The same goes for Sauk Prairie skipper Lucas Koenig.
The WIAA’s Board of Control approved the addition of a girls individual state tournament last week beginning with the 2021-22 season. The vote was unanimous.
It marks the first addition of a girls sport since 2001 when girls hockey was added.

Excitement. Eagerness. Exhilaration.
All mixed with a large dose of cautiousness.
The Home Talent League plans to begin its season on the weekend of July 4 with new several social distancing measures now in place. Teams were supposed to start play in May, but the season was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Sauk Prairie’s Home Talent League team came within one win of capturing the league championship last season.
It was an unforgettable run that included three walk-off victories in the playoffs, highlighted by Sam Koenig’s walk-off grand slam in Round 1 of the Final Four versus Verona. Overall the Twins finished with a record of 25-9.
