Eagles’ girls fall to Beaver Dam

Junior guard Naomi Breunig scored a team-high 13 points, but the Eagles lost a Badger North Conference game to the host Beaver Dam Golden Beavers 80-44 last Friday night. The Golden Beavers came out on fire, sprinting out to an early 17-4 lead and never looked back. However, the Eagles rebounded to play Beaver Dam nearly even for the rest of the first half. “I was happy with how hard we were playing. We were playing aggressive,” Sauk Prairie coach Amber Fiene said. “We missed too many layups, which was unfortunate. But I was happy with how hard we played to start the game.” The Golden Beavers extended their lead to 39-20 at halftime over Sauk Prairie (5-4, 2-3 Badger North), which shot just 32 percent from the field (18 of 57) and 36 percent (4 of 11) at the free-throw line for the game and committed 26 turnovers. Junior guards Maty Wilke scored 17 points and Natalie Jens added 16 points to pace Beaver Dam (9-2, 5-0), the two-time defending conference and three-time defending WIAA Division 2 state champion. “They were making their layups, we were missing ours,” Fiene said. “But it was hard to be mad because we getting tips and steals out of our press. It could have been a lot closer game.” Sophomore forward Makenzie Breunig added nine points, while senior guard Ella Schad chipped in eight points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals for the Eagles, who had their two-game winning streak snapped. “Ella has been playing so well for us, and defensively she is so important to our team,” Fiene said of Schad. “She makes so many things happen.” Sophomore guard Kassia Marquardt led Sauk Prairie with six rebounds, and Naomi Breunig also contributed four rebounds, four assists and two steals. “Beaver Dam is a pretty solid team,” Fiene said. “I’m excited to play them again. I think that if we could have made a few more baskets we could have kept it a little bit closer. Total fouls: SP 12; BD 16.   BOYS SWIMMING Sauk Prairie/Wisconsin Heights finished in 23rd place out of 26 schools with eight points at the 26th annual Marquette Invitational Swimming meet at the Olympic-sized Walter Schroeder Aquatic Center in Brown Deer last Saturday. Top-ranked Division 1 program Sun Prairie won the meet with 226 points, holding off second-ranked Waukesha South/Catholic Memorial, which was second with 224 points. Junior Ben Wiegand paced Sun Prairie with three meet records, winning the 50-yard freestyle in 20.42 seconds and the 100 in 57.19. He also anchored the winning 200 freestyle relay, which set a record of 1:25.39. The star-studded meet included the top five teams in Wisconsin Swimming Coaches Association Division 1 rankings. “The majority of our times were all best times,” Sauk Prairie/Wisconsin Heights coach Todd Wuerger said. “I was real happy with how the guys did. We swam well. “Overall, it was a great day. We only had 13 guys competing, which is about half of our roster. It was a limited entries meet. We only had 24 individual entries and our ‘A’ relays only. For the guys who competed, they understood it was a privilege to be in the lineup.” Sauk Prairie/Wisconsin Heights’ top finish was its 200 freestyle relay of sophomore Matthew Loy, juniors Sam Beattie and Adam Stecker and sophomore Ryan Godwin, which was 13th in 1:33.87. Individually, Loy was 33rd in the 100 butterfly (:58.86), and junior Alec Buss was 33rd in the 100 backstroke in 1:02.48. Loy was also 34th in the 200 individual medley (2:11.67). “Sun Prairie could win the state meet this year,” Wuerger said. “They were phenomenal. It was almost like a state meet for Division 1. Then you have a smattering of Division 2 teams like us and Madison Edgewood. It’s a nice facility with some nice competition.
