Heights boys seeded 11th

The postseason path will be extremely daunting for Wisconsin Heights’ boys basketball team.
The Vanguards received the No. 11 seed in their half of the sectional and travel to sixth-seeded River Ridge for a WIAA Division 4 regional quarterfinal on March 3 at 7 p.m. The winner of that game travels to third-seeded Mineral Point for a regional semifinal on March 6 at 7 p.m.
The regional finals are March 7.
“Believe it or not, I was pleased with (our seed),” Heights coach Zack Colby. “It gives us a winnable, although tough game against River Ridge. And then we would be on the road to Mineral Point.
“If there is ever a year an 11 seed Heights team could go on a run, this would be it. But we will have to knock off formidable opponents each game from here on out.”
Heights also split a pair of games last week.
First, the Vanguards defeated host Waterloo, 58-51, on Feb. 18. Heights then dropped a 67-63 decision to visiting Belleville last Friday.
Heights led, 28-12, early, but the Pirates trimmed that deficit to 28-20 by halftime. The Vanguards survived a somewhat sloppy second half, but were far from thrilled with their performance.
De’Shawn Barsness led the Vanguards with 16 points, while Devin Brabender added 15 and Lathan Parman had 12.
“Nothing really felt good about this one and I think the hangover effect bled into Belleville,” Colby said.
Belleville then edged the host Vanguards last Friday in a game that had huge seeding implications.
Brabender led Heights with 16 points and Barsness added 12.
Heights fell to 10-10 on the year and 4-5 in the Southern Capitol Conference.
“We actually played quite well, limiting our turnovers to just seven,” Colby said. “But credit to Belleville. They are a really solid team.”
