GYMNASTICS
Sauk Prairie’s girls gymnastics team took fourth in its division at the annual McClellan Invitational hosted by Holmen High School last Saturday.
However, junior all-around performer Heidi Kuhnau was awarded the prestigious ‘McClellan Award’. The award is annually presented to an athlete that the judges vote on that demonstrates a love for the sport, a love for her teammates, and a good attitude and sportsmanship.
“Though it was not Heidi’s best meet, where she had a fall on beam and bars, she still maintained a great positive attitude and it was noticed by the judges,” Sauk Prairie coach Justine Anderson said. “It was very emotional, as we have not had anyone from Sauk Prairie ever win that award, though we attend this meet every year, and it means so much that her true spirit was noticed by others.”
Kuhnau finished second in the floor exercise (8.85), third in the all-around (32.050) and fifth on the uneven bars (7.15). Junior Carina Meixelsperger was also fifth on floor exercise (7.75).
“Though we came in fourth as a team, I thought they put together some pieces of routines that they had been working really hard on,” Anderson said. “We started shaky on beam, but then Ava (Putnam) and Emily (Herbrand) PRed on bars, and Heidi (Kuhnau) PRed on floor.”
The Eagles’ JV team dominated the competition in its meet, finishing first in the team competition.
“We also had all three all-around competitors get a medal and Rachel (Endthoff) medaled on every event, including a first-place finish on beam and all-around,” Anderson said.
• Waunakee/DeForest 128.275, Sauk Prairie 119.550 — Heidi Kuhnau won two individual events and the all-around title for the Eagles, but the host Warriors won all four team events to cruise to the dual-meet victory.
“It was another two-point increase for varsity, bringing us to a total of seven points of improvement in just a month,” coach Anderson said. “Heidi took first on vault and all-around, despite a fall on the beam and floor, which makes the second meet in a row with a first-place overall finish against teams that are scoring much higher than us.
“Addie (Desroches) and Ava (Putnam) also PRed on the bars and Addie’s beam score went up a point from last week. Ava also improved her all-around score, improving a little on each event and getting another PR on floor, which put her in 3rd place all around.”
• On deck: Sauk Prairie will host Monona Grove in a Badger Conference dual on Thursday at the Grand Avenue Elementary School gym at 6:30 p.m.
