Residents told what to do with unsolicited seed packets

People across the country are reporting receiving random seed packets that appear to have originated from China.

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection advises people to not plant any unsolicited seeds they may receive in the mail. The seeds remain unknown and may contain invasive plants.

Recipients are encouraged to not throw away any packages and leave them sealed. Keep any packaging and envelopes, if possible. Hold onto these items and contact the DATCP. The department will contact you with what to do with the materials.

All foreign seeds shipped to the U.S. should have a phytosanitary certificate, which guarantees the seeds have met import requirements.

Unsolicited seeds could contain invasive materials or weeds which could damage local native plants, wildlife, cattle and habitats.
