On the Same Page: Bird City presentation and more at Reedsburg Public Library

Next week’s schedule includes the beginning of RPL’s fall youth programming lineup, a Bird City presentation, and later in the week, a program on the Badger Army Ammunition Plant.
On Wednesday, Sept. 16, Bob and Mary Vethe will visit the library at 6 p.m. to present a program on the birdlife found at the Necedah Wildlife Refuge. This program is jointly sponsored by Reedsburg Public Library and the City of Reedsburg as part of the Bird City Wisconsin initiative. The Vethes, volunteers at the refuge since 2012, will share a visual presentation. Notably, the preserve was the home of the endangered Whooping crane reintroduction effort, which utilized an ultra-light aircraft to lead young cranes on their migration path. Several other bird species, whose populations are continually monitored, can also be found there.
Looking ahead, on Sunday, Sept. 20, at 1 p.m., Carolyn Dallmann will return to the Reedsburg Public Library to present the program, Powder Plant: Where did the Farmers Go when Suddenly their Land was Gone? Dallmann explores the experiences of farmers who received an ultimatum in December of 1941, demanding that they vacate their land by March 1, 1942 for the construction of the Badger Plant. The psychological effect of this ultimatum would remain with families for years.
Youth programs starting on Monday, Sept. 14, are a good mix of the new and the old! The beginning of the week boasts a new school-age lineup. Middle School Mondays are planned for the first and third Mondays of the month from 6 to 7 p.m. A variety of book related activities and crafts are planned for students in sixth through eighth grades. High School Hangout will be held on the second and fourth Monday of each month, also from 6 to 7 p.m. The High School Hangout kickoff session on Sept. 14 will feature music bingo, with snacks and silly prizes.
Tuesday afternoons are devoted to programs for youth in kindergarten through fifth grade. Story Seekers (grades K-2) is scheduled for the first and third Tuesday of each month, from 4 to 5 p.m. Similar to the former After School Book Club, there will be a snack, an age appropriate read aloud, and a coordinating activity. The first meeting will be on Sept. 15. The popular summer program, Time Travelers (grades 3-5) will meet Sept. 22 and then regularly on the second Tuesday of each month to study a different period of history and enjoy a related craft or activity. All students in kindergarten through fifth grade are invited to a monthly Lego Club meeting, typically the fourth Tuesday of each month, with the first meeting on Sept. 29.
Babygarten returns on Wednesday, Sept. 16, at 10 a.m. with a new name – Baby and Me. The program featuring books, songs, and free play is designed for children ages 0-2, their caregivers and siblings. Preschool Storytime will resume on Thursdays and Fridays this fall at 10 a.m. beginning Sept. 17. Topics for the fall include Back to School, A is for Apple, Autumn, Fire Safety, Pumpkins and Farm Animals.
