Evelyn Marie Richert

Evelyn Marie Richert, of Reedsburg Wisconsin, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 1, 2026 at the Sauk County Health Care Center.  

Evelyn was born in rural Wisconsin near La Crosse, the daughter of Henry M. Bobo and Marie A. Dinse.  Henry and Marie had a large family, and Evelyn was blessed to have five brothers and three sisters.  One of Evelyn’s fond recollections of those early times as a young girl was of her brothers coming home with a washtub full of fish and the family enjoying a fish fry.  A meal of freshly caught fish from the waters of Wisconsin would remain a favorite throughout Evelyn’s lifetime. 

On February 12, 1950, Evelyn married Gerhard “Gary” A. Richert and they too were to be blessed with a large family, having four daughters and two sons. Evelyn and Gary belonged to St. John’s Lutheran Church in Reedsburg.  Every Saturday night, Evelyn would make sure that the children’s shoes were polished and lined up on the kitchen table and that their Sunday best clothes were ready for early morning services.  After Church, often the family then took a leisurely drive through the Sauk county countryside.   Unbeknownst to Evelyn, those slow country drives were much more enjoyable for her and Gary, than was the case for all their kids who were packed into the back seat.

After retiring from her long career at Hankscraft Inc., Evelyn remained busy with her friends and caring for her family.  She made sure that there was always plenty of good food ready whenever her Grandkids stopped over.  And if the Grandkids weren’t sure how to dress for school that day, a call to Grandma could always be made for the latest weather forecast.  Sons-in-law also were not forgotten, as it was a sure thing that a freshly baked favorite pie was always found in Evelyn’s kitchen whenever the family stopped by for a visit. And sleep overs with the Grandkids always involved plenty of ice-cream, while watching Evelyn’s favorite TV game shows, old re-runs from a simpler time, and of course on Sunday nights 60 Minutes too.  

Evelyn was a charming, endearing lady who made friends easily and who was much loved by all that had the pleasure to know her.  Her concern was always focused on those that she loved, her spirit was always bright, and her faith ever optimistic.  She will be truly missed by her many friends, and by her family, all of whom so enjoyed being in the warmth of Evelyn’s loving and compassionate presence whenever they were together with her.

Evelyn is survived by a sister, Betty Simpson and by Evelyn’s children; daughter Carol Rhinehart of Eau Claire, son Paul (Glenda) Richert of Madison, son Ron (Fran) Richert of Reedsburg, daughter Rita (Casey) Trumble of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, daughter Sherrie (David) Hackworth of Spokane Valley, Washington, and daughter Jane (Bob) Thieding of Reedsburg.

Evelyn is survived by thirteen Grandchildren; Jessica Dewitz, Matthew Rhinehart, Travis (Sarah) Richert, Holly (Ben) Ekern, Heather (Barry) Engel, Jared (Ali) Richert, Jennifer Trumble (Ryan Songer), Kevin (Sue) Strutz, Jason Strutz (Jeff Miller), Niki (Jaime) Schulenburg, Amanada (Lucas) Koenecke, Josh (Collen) Hahn, and Cody Hahn; as well as Evelyn’s 25 Great Grandchildren and a Great-Great Granddaughter.  

Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband Gary; by her parents; by seven of her siblings, Ethel, Merwin, Veryl (“Bud”), Emil, Virginia (“Donnie”), Wayne, and Bill; and by two sons-in-law Richard (“Dick”) Rhinehart and Jim Strutz.  

Evelyn’s family expresses their deep gratitude for the loving care provided to Evelyn from all the staff and the physicians affiliated with the Sauk County Health Care Center.

Visitation will be held from 10:00 to 11:30 AM on Friday August 7, 2026 at St John’s Lutheran Church in Reedsburg.  A celebration of life service will then be held following visitation at 11:30 AM with Pastor Kris Totzke officiating. Burial will follow at St John’s Cemetery.  A Memorial Luncheon after the service at the cemetery will be held at Brewster’s Lanes in Reedsburg.  Memorials of remembrance may be made to St John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church.
