On the Same Page: Start of summer programs, upcoming events at Reedsburg Public Library
Summer programs begin at Reedsburg Public Library next week and there is something for everyone.
Highlights of the week include the summer kickoff with J&R Aquatic Animal Rescue on Tuesday, June 16, and RPL’s own entry in the Butterfest Parade on Saturday, June 20. On Monday, June 22, RPL will host historian Peter Shrake for his presentation about 19th Century Wisconsin.
Our summer reading programs for all ages run through Aug. 22. Stop in and sign up to track your reading and enter to win fun prizes. If you haven’t done so already, check out RPL’s schedule of educational programs each week. Starting this Monday, June 15, at 10 a.m., Reedsburg Writers will meet to work on their individual writing and illustrating projects. The program is open to all youth who are able to write independently. Later in the day, Teen Time meets at 2 p.m. to finish their Butterfest float. Be sure to attend the Butterfest Parade at 10 a.m. on Saturday to see what they’ve created.
On Tuesday, June 16, at 2 p.m. Time Travelers (K-2nd Grade) gather for a session on pirates. In the evening, J&R Aquatic Animal Rescue will kick off the summer with their program at 6 p.m. in the Library Community Room. This group is committed to rescuing and rehoming exotic pets that have been abandoned. Participants may be able to interact with some animals.
On Wednesday, June 17, at 10 a.m., Babygarten, (for all babies ages 0 to 2 and their caregivers and siblings) is all about the ocean. The Discovery Days (Grades 3-5), topic on Thursday, June 18, at 2 p.m. is gardening. Join Miss Stephanie for painting mini ceramic pots and planting seeds. Register online or via phone for this program. Preschool storytime on Friday, June 19, at 10 a.m. is appropriately all about summer.
Adults are not forgotten in next week’s programming schedule. RPL’s Memoir Writing group will meet at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, June 9, either in person or via Zoom to share bicycling memories. New participants are always welcome.
The Local History and Genealogy Meet Up will be gathering at the Reedsburg Area Chamber of Commerce Building at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 10. Chamber Executive Director Kristine Koenecke will share the history of the iconic railway station, now serving as Reedsburg’s Chamber office, and one of the entry points for the state’s 400 Recreational Trail.
The Mingle and Muse program for adults and teens begins its summer session on Wednesday, June 17, at 2 p.m. Our guests will be exchange student Nene Tokunaga from Kyoto, Japan, with her Reedsburg host, local history teacher Matt Smuksta. The Japanese art of origami will be demonstrated, with an opportunity for you to try your hand at this elegant art.
On Monday, June 22, at 6 p.m. join us for historian Peter Shake’s presentation “The Land of Promise: Wisconsin in the Early 19th Century, 1816-1848.” Shrake, archivist at the Robert L. Parkinson Library at Circus World, has done extensive research on early Wisconsin history. Learn about a tumultuous era in Wisconsin from the War of 1812 to statehood in 1848.
