On the Same Page: Grateful Bread Day and Cranes over Wisconsin at Reedsburg Public Library
Mark your calendars next week for two exciting events at Reedsburg Public Library.
The Friends of the Library will hold its annual Grateful Bread Day fundraiser on Monday, Nov. 18.
On Wednesday evening, Nov. 20, representatives from the International Crane Foundation will present their program, Cranes over Wisconsin, at 5 p.m.
On Monday, Nov. 18, RPL’s Friends group will begin selling bread at 9 a.m. in the library’s Community Room. A variety of homemade yeast breads, quick breads, sourdough, muffins and scones will be on offer. The sale will continue until sold out. If you are interested in baking bread for this event, Friends bread committee chair Chris Schrank emphasizes that “the important thing is for the bread to be homemade and fresh!” If you are looking for ideas about what to bake, check out the bread baking books currently on display in the Library! Bakers should bag or wrap their items in plastic, and label them. Donations can be dropped off at the Library on Sunday, Nov. 17, from noon to 2:45 p.m. or from 7:30 to 9 a.m. on Monday. Customers should know that payment may be made by cash, check or credit card.
Even as bread nourishes our bodies, the Friends’ fundraising efforts contribute to the health and well being of the library, providing for the little extras that the regular library budget may not cover and which enhance services at RPL. This year’s bread sale funds are earmarked for updates to the current public printer and scanner, which has proven valuable to the community.
Since 2014, Reedsburg has held the distinction of being a recognized Bird City in Wisconsin. On Wednesday, Nov. 20, to celebrate this status, RPL in partnership with the City of Reedsburg will host the International Crane Foundation at 5 p.m. in the library’s Community Room. In the not so distant past, both sandhill cranes and whooping cranes faced near extinction due to unregulated hunting and habitat loss. Today, due to the conservation efforts of groups such as ICF, sandhill cranes are no longer endangered and whooping crane populations are slowly growing. Wisconsin residents have the chance to see 20,000 sandhill cranes and 76 whooping cranes each year.
ICF representatives will show a film about the history of cranes in Wisconsin, and will bring a crate of interactive crane artifacts. Participants will learn how to distinguish sandhill cranes from whooping cranes, and how they might become involved as ambassadors for cranes in Wisconsin as a volunteer and citizen scientist. There is no registration or fee to attend this program.
