Next week, the library continues its 125th anniversary celebration with a presentation by local historian Lee Gnatzig on Wednesday, Oct. 16, at 6 p.m. in the library’s Community Room. As a reminder, the library will be closed on Monday, Oct. 14, for an all-day staff in-service session.
Gnatzig’s Wednesday presentation, People, Places and Events that Linger in the Past, brings to the fore some little-known facts from Reedsburg’s history. Gnatzig has been a history buff for several years and especially since joining the Reedsburg Historic Preservation Commission. He has created several video segments about the history of Reedsburg, including the Rudd-Meyers-Nishan Legacy, The Mackey Family, and Herbert H. Webb, Reedsburg Benefactor, which can be viewed on the Commission’s website (www.reedsburghpc.org). At the presentation, Gnatzig will talk about Reedsburg’s Killer Tornado, the interesting story of Albert Powell and his watch, the creation of Anna Stone Park, and a challenging day for a local B-17 pilot. The program is free and no registration is required.
In further celebration of the library’s 125th anniversary, RPL is sponsoring a scavenger hunt for adults and children. Adults and youth may pick up a Quasquicentennial Scavenger Hunt Quiz at the front desk and are challenged to find the answers in the library collections and from the library’s website. Those who complete the questions will have their names entered in a prize drawing on Wednesday, Oct. 23, at the library’s final anniversary event. The Friends of the Library have provided the prize baskets sure to please library enthusiasts of all ages. You do not have to be present to win.
On the final anniversary event on Wednesday, Oct. 23, at 6 p.m., in addition to the prize drawing and celebratory refreshments, Library Director Sue Ann Kucher will present The History of the Reedsburg Public Library. This new visual presentation draws from the library’s own archival keepsakes and photographs as well as documentation from the Reedsburg newspapers through the years. Check out the library history display in the foyer case to see if you remember the library stamps and media formats of days gone by!
In a continuation of its historical theme, Reedsburg Public Library has chosen a classic for its monthly book discussion at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 22. Guest facilitator and retired English professor John Strauss will lead a discussion of Charles Dickens’ “Great Expectations.” All are welcome to attend and participants may read an abridged version of the tale, or even view the movie before the discussion! Several different copies and formats are available at the library for checkout.
