Ring in the new year with some new (to you!) books and artwork from the Friends of the Library Book Sale! Book donations, and materials weeded from the library’s collection will be on offer, as well as vintage paintings from the late local wildlife artist Dorothy Ziegler.
Ziegler, a Milwaukee area artist, would retire to the Reedsburg area in 2008 where she continued to paint birds, waterfowl and other animals. Many of the paintings are set in frames intricately carved by her husband Robert. These paintings were given by the family to the Reedsburg Public Library in 2018 to benefit the Library. A few have been kept for the enjoyment of the community, but others will be sold with proceeds benefiting the Library. A minimum donation of $50 is required for each painting.
Payment for books or paintings may be made to the Friends of the Library by cash, check or credit card.
The doors of the Community Room will open for the sale on Thursday, Jan. 11, at 8:30 a.m., and the sale will run during Library open hours through Sunday, Jan. 14. Friends of the Library get a first chance at the inventory on Wednesday, Jan. 10, from 5 to 8 p.m. An individual membership to the Friends is $10 for the calendar year, and a family membership is $20. Memberships may be purchased at the Wednesday night preview sale.
The Friends of the Library are still in need of help setting up and manning the sale. If you are interested in helping, contact Assistant Library Director Caitlin Opatik. Even after the sale is finished, much behind-the-scenes work is necessary in preparing for the next sale event. Friends volunteers mark book donations to be sold with colored tags. Items that have been through a few sales without being purchased are weeded from sale inventory. Volunteers also remove barcodes and plastic covers from dated or worn books that staff have withdrawn from the library’s collection.
The Friends of the Library Annual Membership meeting will be held on Sunday, Jan. 7, at 1 p.m. in the Library’s Community Room. The meeting is open to all and is a great opportunity to meet people and find out how you can help the library by being a member of the Friends. Help is always needed not only in preparing for book sales, but also for the annual Pie and Bread Sales, and for other various committees. Friends of the Library can expect to enjoy a light finger-food potluck at the meeting and are invited to bring a dish to share. If you have ever had any questions about the Friends of the Reedsburg Library or interest in becoming a Friend, we hope to see you there!
