The Sauk County Sheriff’s Office is still trying to find out what happened to a Wauwatosa man who was found dead in Devil’s Lake State Park last week.

At about 11:40 a.m. Oct. 14, the office and Department of Natural Resources were called to the park to investigate what appeared to be a homicide on the Grottos Trail, which is on the south side of the park. An Oct. 15 autopsy confirmed the homicide by stabbing.

The victim was identified as 24-year-old John Craig Schmutzer, according to the Sauk County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the sheriff, Schmutzer had previously visited the Hilldale shopping center in Madison, Wildcat Mountain State Park in Vernon County and the La Valle area.

A suspect has not yet been identified and the case is under active investigation.
