Letter to the Editor:   A Referendum for our Schools What is a referendum? A referendum is a vote asking for money from the community to make changes to our schools. For instance, Merrimac Community Charter School might get a new gym and some new classrooms. The current gym would become the cafeteria and it would get more space for activities. And here’s something cool! The gym would be able to be accessed by the community for events. And with all this activity we would need new parking spaces. If you’re wondering what we’d do with all this space, why don’t I tell you. First off, our gym is too small for all the events we host. If you have been to one of our concerts you know what I’m talking about. The reason we need new classrooms is we have more kids. Did you know not so long ago our school only had about 50 students? Now we have 144 of us. There will be a vote this spring to see if this referendum passes. They are all on the staff of school’s newspaper, the MCCS Gazette.   Dear Editor, I’m writing in support of the referendum that the Sauk Prairie School Board recently announced. I certainly understand that it’s going to cost my husband and me additional funds when it passes. But I don’t think there is anything that would make more sense than to spend hard earned money on the future of our children and thus, the future of the community. As our population grows our buildings must expand, as infrastructure wears out it needs to be replaced, as requirements for health and safety increase adjustments must be made. In my mind the only alternative is to put these changes off to an inevitable later date when the costs will be higher, changes more difficult, and the Sauk Prairie School System further behind other area school districts.
