Nature and Society: Chasing elusive kittens

I am beset by untouchable kittens! I have been wanting a couple of kittens as company. Buster is infinitely old, diabetic and she has never had much personality. So when two orange kittens showed up in one of the live traps I set for raccoons, I was delighted. Surely, if I fed them, they would see me as a benefactor, not a predator.

STANEK COLUMN: The many languages of ‘Dad’

Fathers are complex beings. That’s no slight to them or mothers; they just carry and express themselves differently.

It’s funny because a lot of people believe men are easy to read, and that women are the confusing ones. I’ve found, though, that men — especially fathers and husbands — require as much analysis as women.

Letter: War of the words

Hiding concepts behind socially acceptable words is dishonest. Example: Sexual activity is labeled ‘making love’. Silly goose, you cannot take a mixing bowl, add flour, sugar, salt, eggs, add some special additive, put it in the oven and bake LOVE at 400 degrees.

GUEST COLUMN: Lessons taught, learned: Reflecting on this school year

Jill Underly. (State of Wisconsin photo)

As educators, we are taught to be reflective practitioners, always looking at how a lesson went to learn how to teach it better next time. When I taught middle and high school social studies, it was an hour-by-hour, sometimes minute-by-minute, experience in reaction to how a lesson was being learned (or not) by my students.

Nature and Society: The lake sings

The lake is a massive living being. Even its waves sound like breaths: Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh. I spent a week on the shore of Lake Superior and for me it is the most peaceful place on earth. Everything else falls away and there is only light and sky and water and the many moods of the great lake.

STANEK COLUMN: No rain makes you feel small

Checking the forecast is an exercise in anxiety lately. If you have a lawn or garden, you know why.

As of the last time I checked for this week, there is still no guarantee for rain anytime soon. That’s a serious problem.

Letter: Licenses for illegals won’t make roads safer

Amy Thomas’ May 25 letter calling for giving driving privileges to illegal aliens reflects that large part of our society that disrespects the rule of law and national sovereignty.

Letter: Why is there a debt limit debacle?

Kevin McCarthy and the MAGA people do not want billionaires to pay their fair share of taxes. FPOTUS cut his and other billionaire taxes and raised the US national debt by $7.8 trillion.

MAGAs do not want tax-fraud FPOTUS and other tax-dodging billionaires to be audited by the IRS. That would force them to pay more in taxes.
