The first week in August is the second to the last in this year’s official library summer events calendar. Be sure to sign up for local author Amy Laundrie’s Discovery Days presentation on Aug. 4 at 2 p.m. and the After Hours Teen Lock-In scheduled for the evening of Aug. 12.

Discovery Days, a program designed for children entering kindergarten through Grade 5, welcomes educator, author, and nature enthusiast Amy Laundrie to explore her book, “Follow Me Into the Woods.” Laundrie, a retired fourth-grade teacher, has authored eight books running the gamut from chapter books for older elementary students to nature picture books. In her Aug. 4 program, after listening to “Follow Me Into the Woods,” participants will select a clue to help solve a riddle. Have fun discovering the item held together by hooks and barbs, or the object that was coughed up by an owl! Prizes are involved. Please register for this program 24 hours in advance to ensure that adequate materials are on hand.

Young adults entering Grades 6 through 12 are invited to the annual After Hours Teen Lock-In at the Library hosted by Youth Services Librarians Miss Jess and Miss Maxine. Teens will be “locked” into the library after hours on Friday evening, Aug. 12, from 5 to 9 p.m. Not only will they experience the library “behind the scenes,” but they will also have a pizza dinner and a showing of a popular Disney movie, with popcorn provided. Participants will also enjoy the making of butterfly candles, and the playing of the ever popular game “pool noodle freeze tag/capture the Eiffel Tower.” Registration is required at least 48 hours in advance, and teens must stay at the library during the program.

Just a reminder, the last day to report reading for the Youth Summer Reading challenges is Saturday, Aug. 20. Grand prize drawings will be announced the following week. Regular summer event programming concludes on Aug. 12, but youth may still enjoy free movies scheduled before the school year resumes.

Movies for the whole family will be shown on Monday, Aug.15, 22 and 29 in the library’s Community Room at 1 p.m. Teen movies will be shown on Friday, Aug. 19 and 26 at 1 p.m. No registration is required.
