Weston students hold own version of March Madness

Weston second-graders devoted March to exploring books instead of basketballs, but that didn't mean they couldn't have a sports theme. (Submitted photo)

It was more about books instead of basketballs last month at Weston Elementary School.

Ms. Deaver’s class held a March Madness book bracket with the sport’s theme. At the start of the month, the children had the chance to preview 16 books and guess which ones would make it to the finals.

Each day in March, the second graders read a book with the teacher. During the program, students practiced reading strategies including how to figure out the title, author, roster of characters, setting and author purpose. Students then voted on which books they liked the best.

Kids also learned about common vocabulary between books and discovered how to use new words in sentences, as well as character detail.
