For the past 21 years, Lyle Lindholm, Weston's high school math teacher, has hosted a chess tournament for any willing participants. Held during lunch hours, the competition began in February and ended with the championship match being held on March 19. The tournament wass double elimination so everyone got to play at least two games. James Timm took first place this year, beating out seven other players, with Alex Hasse earning second place.

Lindholm said, "I have always enjoyed the chess tournament. It is a fairly relaxed tournament because I want everyone to be able to feel they can participate and not feel too intimidated. I enjoy seeing kids shine in this area when they sometimes aren't given the opportunity to shine in other areas. Chess is a great game that takes a lot of skill and strategy. You use a lot of logical thinking and reasoning. Those skills help out in my math classroom and they also help in the real world."

The annual chess tournament has been a long-standing tradition at Weston.
