Obituary: David Karl Biel

David Karl Biel, age 81, of Reedsburg, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 11, 2021 while in hospice. He was born in December 1939, in Melrose Park, Illinois, to David and Emma. He married his wife, Donna, of 53 years in 1967 and together they raised their family in Villa Park, Illinois, later to retire in La Valle, Wisconsin. Dave’s career in test equipment maintenance spanned 26 years at GTE in Northlake, Illinois, prior to pursuing other interests in early retirement.

Dave loved the outdoors, exploring many national parks and camping whenever time allowed.  He enjoyed taking photographs and sharing memories with friends and family on his slide projector. Later in life, he loved to share the natural spring he discovered within his 25 acres of land where he built his retirement home.  There, he enjoyed exploring the lake on his Jon boat, chopping firewood, taking the dogs (and grandkids) for a tractor ride, or simply grilling brats soaked in Leinenkugel’s. Dave could tell a story! He loved to share stories about his Air Force service, ham radio, and road trips out West. He could tell you how to design, architect, build, or repair anything on the planet and proudly applied his gifted skillset to any and every opportunity. There are few country music songs that don’t spark a memory of special “dad” time in the garage learning something about something.  He was the best math and science tutor and couldn’t be stumped in history or current events either – he was a greater gift to teachers than they probably ever knew.

Dave was known for his infectious smile and friendly greeting of “how do you do?” to everyone he met.  He quickly continued the exchange with, “fair to middlin’” and “take it easy” to display his peaceful spirit and down-to-earth values. Dave was the most kind, gentle, and humble man you will ever meet and lived a life of constant dedication, devotion, and service to his family, friends, and community. He never sought or required affirmation or gratitude, yet never faltered. He served countless hours each Sunday recording the church service for members unable to attend in person, volunteered with the Boy Scouts, and supported the Shriners and a variety of other organizations. But his true service and mission in life were his unfaltering love and devotion to his wife and children through his steadfast faith in God, country, and family.

He is survived by his wife, Donna; his brother, Al; sisters, Nancy and Susie; daughters, Denise (Frank) Sweeney, Dawn (Aaron) Baugh; son, David Biel, III, and six grandchildren, Hannah, Lexi, Zachary, Emma, Ryan, and Katie.

Dave wished to be cremated. For those who would like to express their sympathies, the family asks that you consider Scottish Rite for Children or Shriners’ Hospitals for Children.

The Farber Funeral Home, Reedsburg, is assisting the family.
